Description
I believe that it is possible to generate a parallel experience of enjoying ASL poetry for non signers by using Japanese Haiku. The greatest challenges have been ABC and Number Stories, where the “trick” of the ASL poem is that the handshapes for each sign follow a restricted progression through the alphabet or a numerical sequence such as 1 through 10. I struggled for years to find a reasonable approach to interpreting these ASL poems for non-signing audiences and ended up with the conclusion that the best approach was to explain the structure prior to the performance and then allow the audience to silently watch without attempting any simultaneous version in English. This approach still has merit, but I have since found that using Haiku provides some rewarding results.
